Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at FelineFreedomSociety@gmail.com, or use our chat feature in the bottom right corner of the site if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Feline Freedom Society is primarily located in Greenville, North Carolina, but we work to assist surrounding communities throughout Eastern North Carolina as we are able. While our focus is on this region, we do not limit our adoptions to Eastern NC—and have traveled as far as New Hampshire and Texas to get our cats to their perfect homes.

We are a heart-centered cat rescue dedicated to providing a safe haven for special needs cats in Eastern North Carolina. Feline Freedom Society was started by a group of rescuers who came together to give overlooked and vulnerable cats the second chance that they deserve. We believe every cat deserves a chance to live a happy, healthy life—no matter their physical or medical challenges. Whether they’re blind, deaf, have mobility issues, or are missing limbs, our mission is to give them the love, support, and care they need to thrive. We’re more than just a rescue; we’re a community that advocates for these wonderful, resilient cats who need a little extra help finding their forever homes. Through careful, compassionate care, we work to ensure they live their best lives, both in foster care and beyond.

You can reach Feline Freedom Society in several convenient ways! Send us a message through our Facebook or Instagram pages, email us at FelineFreedomSociety@gmail.com, or simply click the chat button on our website—we’re always happy to hear from you!

All Feline Freedom Society Board Members are volunteers and have jobs outside of the rescue. Because of this, we kindly ask that you allow up to two business days for us to respond to messages or emails. We will always do our best to reply as quickly as possible. If you have not received a response from us after two business days, please feel free to send a follow-up message. Thank you for your understanding and patience!

To adopt a pet from Feline Freedom Society, simply fill out our adoption application on our website. Once submitted, our team will review your application, contact your references, and reach out to you with any follow-up questions or next steps. Our standard adoption fee is $100 unless otherwise noted, which helps cover the cost of vetting and care.

To ensure our animals are placed in safe and loving homes, we require the following:

  1. Current Pets: All animals currently in the home must be spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccinations, including FVRCP (distemper) and rabies. Heartworm and flea/tick preventatives are strongly recommended but are not required for adoption approval.

  2. Indoor-Only Policy: Cats adopted from Feline Freedom Society must be indoor-only pets. This does not exclude safe, enclosed catios or supervised outdoor time using leashes or strollers with proper precautions in place. Please note any plans to use these options on your application. The only exception is for cats specifically adopted out as Barn Cats, which will be clearly labeled as such.

  3. Rental Information: If you rent your home, accurate landlord information must be provided. The property must allow pets, and all required pet deposits must be paid once the adoption is approved. This helps ensure the safety, stability, and comfort of both you and your adopted cat.

Every cat adopted through Feline Freedom Society is spayed or neutered, microchipped, and up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations. We ensure all of our cats are fully vetted to the best of our knowledge before going to their new homes, including necessary medical treatments and preventative care. Additionally, we are fully transparent about any known pre-existing conditions or potential future medical needs observed while the cat is in foster care, so adopters can feel informed and prepared.

We aim to host at least two adoption events each month to give our adoptable cats and kittens the opportunity to meet potential families in person. At these events, we also display a binder featuring additional adoptable cats—such as those who are shy, not comfortable in busy environments, or currently available for pre-adoption or foster-to-adopt.

You can also view our pinned post on Facebook, which is updated daily with the current status of each cat (available, adoption pending, foster-to-adopt, etc.). Each cat has a detailed “rescue résumé” with their personality, needs, and preferences to help ensure the best possible match.

We do offer one-on-one meet and greets and foster-to-adopt opportunities on a case-by-case basis, but an approved adoption application is required before moving forward with either option.

Absolutely! Renters are welcome to adopt from Feline Freedom Society. We just ask that you provide the name of your landlord or leasing office and are honest with both us and them about having a cat in your home. Our goal is to ensure that every cat is placed in a stable, pet-friendly home where they can thrive—whether you rent or own.

Yes! Many of our cats and kittens do well in homes with other cats, dogs, and/or children. Each animal in our care has a unique personality, and we provide detailed information about their behavior, preferences, and compatibility in their rescue résumé and profiles to help ensure the best possible match. If you're not sure which cat would be the best fit for your household, we're happy to help guide you through the process.

Yes, you are welcome to adopt multiple cats from Feline Freedom Society—either at the same time or on separate occasions. We believe that lots of cats do better in pairs (unless otherwise noted) so we fully support this! We love when our adopters return to grow their feline family! As always, each adoption requires an approved application to ensure that every cat is placed in a home that meets their individual needs and personality.

You can always return a cat to Feline Freedom Society, regardless of the circumstances or how much time has passed since the adoption. Our adoption contract includes a commitment that if you are no longer able to provide adequate care, if the cat doesn’t work out in your home, or if something happens to you and your planned caregiver cannot care for the cat, you will return the cat to us. We also recommend informing your family and friends about this policy to ensure the cat’s safety and well-being if you are unable to return the cat yourself. Our priority is always the best care and future for every cat we place. We may also require you to fill out our "Owner Surrender Application" for paperwork and record keeping purposes.

We are proud to share that Feline Freedom Society is now an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization as of June 28th, 2025. All donations made to us on or after that date are eligible to be treated as tax-deductible charitable contributions to the fullest extent permitted by law. We gratefully accept donations of supplies such as food, litter, toys, and other essentials, as well as monetary donations via Venmo, Cash App, or in person at our adoption events. Our Employer Identification Number (EIN) is EIN: 39-2934674 . You can find our tax determination letter linked on our "About Us" page.

Please visit our "Donate Now!" page to see all the ways you can help us continue our mission. Your support truly means the world to us and the cats we care for. If you have any questions or would like more details about donating, please feel free to message us directly.

We welcome volunteers who want to help support our mission in a variety of ways! You can volunteer by assisting at our adoption events, being a foster home for one or multiple cats in our care, or supporting us through donations of supplies and resources. If you’re interested in getting involved, visit our "How to Volunteer" page to get started. Every bit of support makes a big difference for the cats we serve!

If you find a stray cat or kitten, please feel free to message us for guidance and support, and fill out our "Stray Surrender Application" with as much detail as possible. We do our best to help, but please understand that we rely entirely on foster homes, which can be full at times, so we may not be able to take in every animal immediately. We may also ask for a donation to help cover the costs of caring for any animals we do take in, as much of our work is self-funded.

In the meantime, keep the stray in a safe, quiet, and warm place—preferably indoors—away from other pets until you can get veterinary care. Be sure to check for a microchip, which can help reunite the cat with its owner. Basic vet care includes checking for fleas, providing food and fresh water, and, if possible, getting the animal checked by a vet for vaccinations, testing, and spay/neuter. We’re happy to offer advice on how to care for strays and connect you with local resources whenever possible. Your patience and care can make all the difference!

If the cat was previously adopted from Feline Freedom Society, we will always take the cat back—no matter the circumstances. Our adopters should never feel alone or stuck if they can no longer keep one of our cats.

For cats not originally adopted from us, we do not normally accept owner surrenders. Our rescue is focused on emergency and special medical-needs cases and operates entirely through foster homes, which means our space is very limited. However, if your cat has special needs or a medical condition, we may be able to find a spot depending on foster and resource availability. We encourage you to fill out our "Owner Surrender Application" so we can review your situation. Every application is carefully considered.

Please understand that you may receive an email stating that we are currently full and unable to take in your cat. That email will provide you with advice gfor your situation based on our experiences and other community resources that may be able to assist you. Thank you for your understanding and for caring enough to seek the best possible outcome for your cat.

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a humane method used to manage and reduce feral and stray cat populations by trapping cats, spaying or neutering them, and then returning them to their original location. Especially used when the cat is feral and not able to be indoors. While TNR is not the primary focus of our mission, we do what we can to support these efforts. We have some contacts and resources that we can share to help guide you in accessing TNR services in your area. Please feel free to reach out to us for more information.

This is very common and completely normal. We recommend following the 3-3-3 Rule, which explains the typical adjustment period for newly adopted cats. Many cats need time and patience to feel safe in a new environment—especially when adjusting to other animals.

When introducing pets, go slow and gradual. Start with separate spaces, allow scent swapping, and use positive reinforcement like treats and calm praise for good behavior. Rushing introductions can cause stress, so patience is key.

For more guidance, please visit our "3-3-3 Rule" page for more detailed information on introductions, home base setup, and helping your cat settle in successfully. You can also message us for advice based on our experiences and knowledge of the animal while in our care. We are always here to help, so please don't hesitate to reach out!
